Lewis Bungener is a French-British artist based in London. He works primarily with clay to create sculptures and installations using hand-building, slip-casting and special effect glazing techniques. His work examines the contradictions in our human condition and our relationship with the non-human world.
After studying Mathematics, Bungener has turned to fields ranging from psychoanalysis to Buddhism to explore our place in the world. Surrounded by a society
where everything is positive and consumable, he is interested in creating work that is negative and resists definition by our human minds. In so doing, Bungener seeks to question the anthropocentric views that are commonly held today.
In a society of the mass-produced, where people have lost touch with the origins of objects and materials, Bungener sees his decision to work with clay and develop his own glazes from raw materials as a reflection of being part of nature rather than superior to it. He believes that the more closely and intimately we work with the resources we have, the more we will value and protect them.
